The specter of Vietnam

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education),  March, 2007  by Robert J. Bresler

Should Pres. Bush's victory strategy fail to bring results by the end of this year, he may be as powerless as Richard Nixon was in 1973. Could we recover from such a defeat, as we eventually did from Vietnam, after 10 difficult years? History never quite repeats itself in the same way, and this time we may not be so fortunate. This enemy has no fear of death, moral inhibitions, government to protect, or empire to preserve. Destruction of the West has become an end in itself. This war is above anything else a test of will. Either we believe in ourselves, our strength, and our values or we don't. As Hanson put it, "It's that elemental."

Robert J. Bresler, National Affairs Editor of USA Today, is professor emeritus of public policy at Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg.
