Putting cow's milk out to pasture
USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), Jan, 2007
With a growing waistline and a son who is highly allergic to anything that contains even a single drop of milk, it was time for a change--to soy milk. While the store-bought brands are fine, we really enjoy hunkering down in the kitchen and preparing things ourselves. Now, this doesn't mean we used to keep a cow in the backyard as a source of fresh milk, but it does mean we picked up the new Soybella Soy Milk Maker from Tribest Corporation. Its design, versatility, convenience, and advanced safety features make it easy for practically anyone to make fresh soy milk--and a variety of other recipes--in the comfort of your own home.
The Soybella ($139) features a stainless steel carafe with a sleek black trim and different program settings that control temperature and grinding time. By simply adding soybeans and water, it takes as little as 15 minutes to prepare fresh soy milk right on the kitchen counter. Once made, you can add brown sugar, vanilla, or any other desired sweetener--or simply enjoy its natural flavor. Soybella also can produce raw almond milk in about 30 seconds and is great for producing a variety of different milks from a wide array of beans and rice, while its dry food grinder accessory enables the grinding of dried beans, nuts, and grains that result in a rich, smooth consistency. (Be sure to wear your special mad-scientist apron during these experimental forays; it makes them that much more fun).
While other machines have exposed heating coils that can get quite hot--and what a pain it is scouring burnt milk off them--the Soybella uses a hidden heating element to warm the water, making it safer to use and easy to clean. Moreover, its sensors ensure the highest quality soy milk production. For instance, the overflow sensor prevents ... well ... overflow, while the dry-run sensor sees to it that the unit will not heat its boiling chamber when not filled with water. Furthermore, the overheat sensor automatically gauges the temperature so that the contents will not get burnt. Perhaps most importantly, the grinding blade cannot spin unless it is enclosed inside the boiling chamber.
