Don't be a summer slacker at work

During the more laid back summer months, a number of organizations undergo a warm-weather metamorphosis, as dress codes start to transform and longer days lead to shorter office hours. Frequent vacations result in half-staffed departments, while an overall more casual attitude is likely to prevail.
"Embrace your company's summertime policies," recommends Peter Handal, chairman, president, and CEO of Dale Carnegie Training, New York. "It is important to interpret seasonal guidelines in the generous spirit they were intended while maintaining a professional decorum"
Handal's suggestions for proper summertime office behavior include:
Enjoy the dress code. It often is relaxed to promote productivity by making employees more comfortable in the heat. Ideally, workers are less distracted in lightweight clothing. However, it is important not to abuse the policy. Do not let questionable fashion choices overshadow your work--avoid skimpy or revealing garments. What you wear says something about your personality and reflects a decision you have made.
Stress-free vacations. Because so many people choose to take their vacation days during the summer, check with Human Resources and your supervisor in advance regarding time off. Try to stagger vacation days with co-workers to ensure there always is someone in the office to cover all business matters. This foresight not only will make your supervisor happy, but will allow you to leave the office with peace of mind, knowing that everything will be taken care of while you are gone.
Shortened summer hours. This is a gesture of goodwill and should be viewed as a reward, not a standard. Workers should be sure to meet deadlines and maintain productivity levels. This way, they can show their employer the effectiveness of lenient policies and ensure that they will be in place every summer.
