A revolution on the links
USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), March, 2006
The man makes the uniform; the uniform doesn't make the man" is one of the long-held truisms of sports. The same cannot be said of athletic equipment. Over the last 20 years especially, there's been a major revolution taking place in which equipment across all sports boundaries has improved dramatically. Hockey and football equipment is lighter, stronger, and more flexible.
Tennis racquets--and their once-tiny sweet spot--have grown tremendously, while the racquet itself weighs next to nothing. Even today's baseball uniforms are made of lightweight material--the heavy flannel jerseys of yesteryear having been relegated to the memorabilia market.
Golf clubs, too, like the tennis racquet, have wider sweet spots, bigger heads, and practically no corresponding weight. Yet, what about the golf glove? When will it, too, join the revolution. Not to fear, linksters, as the wait is officially over with the arrival of the Bionic Golf Glove ($24.95) from the folks at Hillerich & Bradsby Co., Louisville, Ky., the famous makers of those ubiquitous Louisville Slugger bats that can be found at every ball-yard across America. Don't be surprised if the same doesn't quickly become true of golf courses and the Bionic, as it is designed perfectly to aid the anatomical form and function of a golfer's hand. In other words, duffers become one with the club. It's all about zones: The ergonomic motion zones provide optimal flexibility for better fit, comfort, and performance; the index-to-hand interface zone on the back of the forefinger improves breathability and dexterity; the strategic web zones deliver enhanced breathability, helping hands stay real cool, comfortable, and dry. Moreover, the anatomical relief pads even out the surface of the hand for a better, lighter grip, resulting in increased swing speed and greater distance--while the pre-rotated finger design promotes natural closure of the hand. Extra padding in the palm (a common area for wear and tear) improves glove durability, as does top-grade cabretta leather, which is sure to stay supple round after round. Fore!
