Insect control can be a lifesaver

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education),  July, 2005

With mosquito season in full swing, we need to remember that these insects are more than just pesky--one bite can lead to an infection that can cause serious illness or even death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends that people use repellents anytime they go outside, especially between dusk and dawn, has revised its recommendations for protection against West Nile Virus to include picaridin, an ingredient found in many mosquito repellents in Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Asia.

Spectrum Brands, Atlanta, Ga., has introduced Cutter Advanced Insect Repellent, the first in the U.S. to contain picaridin. With no added fragrance, this product is virtually odorless and feels light and clean. We found it more pleasant to use because it isn't sticky and does not need to be washed off when returning indoors.

Cutter Advanced also protects against flies, no-see-ums, fleas, and other biting insects. It is available at mass retailers and grocery and drug stores for $3.99-4.99 for a six-ounce bottle.
