Timers can make life a breeze
USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), Dec, 2004
Electric timers often are linked to home protection and energy conservation. Along with new technology have come creative uses for these handy products--allowing consumers to bring added convenience and automation into their homes.
"Many people only think of using timers to turn their lights on and off when they are vacation," notes Art Noparstak, marketing manager for Intermatic Inc., Spring a manufacturer of electric timers. "While this is certainly important, there are so many other applications that are perfect for everyday use."
According to Noparstak, the uses for electric timers are endless. To offer some ideas, he points out the following common, and not so common, applications for these electricity controls:
* Become an illusionist: Homeowners c ate the illusion that someone is in the home by using timers on lights, radios, and televisions--making a residence appear occupied, even when no one is home. Use this method whether gone for a few hours or a few weeks.
* The lighting cure: Up to 13% of the energy used in a home can be controlled simply by turning lights and appliances on and off. Yet, homeowners often forget this simple task, wasting valuable energy. Using timers on lamps and in place of light switches can cure a case of forgetfulness. Consider rooms that are visited infrequently, such as basements and garages.
* Temperature control: It may be hot outside during the summer, but leaving air conditioning on all day can be expensive and wasteful. Employing a timer helps regulate temperature while saving money. The same concept can apply to heaters during the winter.
*Television and stereo dreams: Consider falling asleep at night to soothing music or television. A timer can remember to turn off the power so you do not have to get up.
* Coffee wake-up call: Thousands of Americans rely on coffee to start the day, although making a pot often can be inconvenient. Why not set a timer and awaken to the smell of a fresh brew? The timer also will shut off the power--which can avoid wasting electricity and burning the pot.
* Brighten the aquarium: Enjoyment of fish can be enhanced by placing aquarium lights on a timer. Not only does it allow the pet owner to see the fish while he or she is home, but it can help prevent tanks from getting too much light and dirtying the aquarium with algae. Make sure to plug in the timer away from the tank to prevent accidental shock from water mixing with electricity.
* A safe homecoming: If returning home after dark, program lights in entry areas to turn on prior to your arrival. This will help forestall injury from stumbling into a dark home and keep intruders at bay.
* Outdoor control: Property timers can handle nearly all types of inclement weather. Use these to automate surrounding landscape and security lighting and never leave the comfort of your home especially during a blizzard or thunderstorm--to turn off the power.
* Boost the engine: For those who live in a cold climate, starting the car in winter can be a painstaking process. Timers can be plugged into engine heaters to help car engines heat up or those cold mornings and make sure the engine is ready at the set time. If the vehicle is in an enclosed area, such as a garage, make sure the door is open before cranking the engine.
* Festive times: The Christmas season is known for its colorful lights, but also is a time of added energy use. A timer can help automate decorative lighting, both inside and outside the home. It also can prevent you from being pricked every time you try to plug in lights behind the tree.
