Ways to make cells last longer

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education),  Dec, 2004

No doubt that many of the gifts on holiday wish lists are the latest and greatest in wireless gadgets and cordless electronics products, including laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, cordless power tools, remote controlled toys the list goes on and on. One thing these products have in common is that "batteries are required." Many cordless electronic products are powered by rechargeable batteries that can and should be recycled when they no longer hold a charge.

The nonprofit Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) make one-stop shopping and recycling a reality during the holidays and beyond. Call 1-800-8-BATTERY or go to www.rbrc.org to get a list of nearby retailers where you can drop off your used rechargeable batteries. Moreover, while your batteries remain charged, make sure to follow these tips from RBRC to maximize their use:

* Follow the charging guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Depending on the individual product, there are specific initial battery charging times before first-time use. This will enable you to obtain maximum battery capacity.

* Let your battery cool to room temperature before recharging. The charge efficiency of most batteries is reduced greatly at elevated temperatures.

* Recharge batteries when they are near to fully discharged. You can tell that a battery is discharged by a sharp drop in power or speed.

* Keep the contact of rechargeable batteries clean--wipe them with a cloth soaked in alcohol.

* Do not return a fully charged battery to the charger for an extra boost. This will overcharge the cells and shorten its life.

* Never leave your cellular phone, camcorder, etc., in the charger when not charging, unless approved by themanufacturer's instructions. Do not use your charger as a stand. Continuous charging will shorten battery life.
