Companies, at least the successful ones, listen to their customers. So, when men's footwear and accessories manufacturer Johnston & Murphy, Nashville, Tenn., began getting calls to its consumer service department from business travelers pleading for shoes that could pass through airport metal detectors, J & M took action. The result is the Signature Series, a line of versatile dress shoes designed to keep businessmen looking professional and feeling comfortable as they clear airport security unhindered. The key to not setting off any alarms is the composite shank that replaces the standard metal one.
The shoes are made of Italian calfskin leather and boast what the company calls XC4, a state-of-the-art system that stands for "extreme comfort to the fourth power." The system's unique cushioning and shock absorption abilities, combined with its flexibility and support features, allow travelers to be on their feet for hours without suffering the effects of foot fatigue.
The insert's soft gel foundation never loses its cushioning properties, while the egg-crate design and perforated calfskin lining keep air flowing at key pressure points. The superior flexibility of the specially scored foam midsole and durable rubber outsole ensure comfort from the first wearing. The heel is contoured and the arch support molded to control unwanted foot motion, reducing heat and friction.
This lace-up line includes the Sylvan (cap toe), Zimmer (split toe), Farris (plain toe) and Warrick (ankle boot). Colors are black or dark mahogany for each pair, which retail for $175.
Fine--quality leather, however, means some special care requirements. Always use a shoe horn to prevent the mouth from breaking down. Leather shoes need one full day to dry out from natural foot perspiration and should not be worn two days in a row. Shoe trees, meanwhile, prevent cracking and permanent creasing. And never use a liquid polish.
There are almost 2,500 outlets selling Johnston & Murphy shoe products. To find the nearest one, log on to www.johnstonmurphy.com.
