Where's the outrage?
Commonweal, March 11, 2005 by Phyllis L. Townley
Your editorial "Torture's Apologists" (February 11) was most welcome. The shattering revelations of abuse at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere provoked loud cries of outrage from both parties, which soon died down. I was surprised that the issue was not seized by the Democrats in the election as an opportunity to indict the Bush administration. Instead, a few "bad apples" have now been found guilty. Case apparently dismissed. Yet when the Alberto Gonzales nomination went to the Senate, I was hopeful that the moral horror occasioned by those graphic scenes of torture might be revived and Gonzales's appointment would be blocked. If the confirmation vote reflects the values of the American people, I grieve for our country.
