Keep quiet & listen

Commonweal,  March 12, 2004  by Linnea Larson

I read with delight and recognition "Caring for the Dying" by Mary Lee Freeman (January 30). Wise words rendered with elegance and beauty. Would that all could read this work. I, too, have walked alongside those who work in hospice. I have given many speeches on hospice care, and taught many classes to health-care professionals of every type about hospice and their own responsibility to practice what Freeman reports a physician from Scotland once said--"There are three things you need to practice good palliative care: a pair of ears to listen with, a butt to sit on, and a mouth to keep shut." Sadly, this kind of care is still rare. Perhaps that will change. I hope and pray it will. Freeman's co-workers, patients, and friends are fortunate to have her clear eyes and attentive ears in their presence. Thank you for printing her piece.
