The note Judas left

Commonweal,  Dec 6, 2002  by Hollis Cate

The Note Judas Left

But I knew something, you see:
   martyrdom required a kiss.
This silver was just incidental and
had to be offered and taken in
the scheme of things. I heard a voice
saying: "Do it for the world. A religion
requires it." I will not have died in vain
despite my unmarked grave. The other
death, the greater one, I propelled. If not
my kiss, whose? Surely not any one of
the others. What did they think? That he
would establish his kingdom while he was
in the flesh? God knew better, and I dare say
he did too. Yes, a kiss for the world. But I
will be remembered only as a betrayer,
never as a player of a role no one wanted
but someone had to play. Otherwise, a
   story without a cross.

Do not include me among those who knew
not what they did. I was the only one who did
know. Neither did my cup pass from me.
But you do not hear me, world.
