Not a luxury
Commonweal, Oct 8, 2004 by Brad Hinker
In his September 10 column ("None of the Above"), John Garvey writes that if John Kerry loses to George W. Bush, Garvey will "mourn Bush's victory and celebrate a well-deserved loss." And he claims to have talked to a number of people "who are sitting this one out." I am appalled by this attitude. This is comparable to children refusing to play because they don't like the rules of the game. To permit evil to exist, it is only necessary for good people to do nothing. I may not be terribly enthusiastic about either candidate, but I recognize evil when I see it, and I see it in the present administration. You can be sure I will vote, and do all I can to encourage others to do the same. We do not have the luxury to do otherwise.
