In the middle

Commonweal,  Sept 24, 2004  by Robert W. Breeden, Jr.

Regarding your open letter to the American bishops. The church has made a critical error by describing the abortion question as whether a person is prochoice or prolife. There is an excluded middle. Many Catholics are stoutly antiabortion, but oppose federal legislation prohibiting abortion. They recognize that the abortion issue is a moral question upon which not all citizens agree.

Abortion might be compared to adultery. Many feel that adultery is a very serious sin. But do we propose to jail adulterers? The most effective way to reduce the number of abortions is to cut down on the abuse of women and to work toward the economic development of poor communities. Such initiatives may help eliminate the causes of this great evil. Would that conservatives considered these alternatives.
