Painter Ellsworth Kelly has been awarded the third rank of Commandeur in the Order of Arts and Letters by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York. Edgar Munhall, curator emeritus of the Frick Collection in New York, was elevated to the second rank of Officier.
The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation has announced the winners of its grants, worth $20,000 each. They are Lisa Collado, Dennis D'Amelio, Gloria DeArcangelis, Joe Fyfe, John Gasper, Edward Henderson, Stefanie Jackson, Sven Lukin, Judith Page and Nagji Patel.
Scottish abstract painter Callum Innes recently won the Jerwood Foundation Painting Prize. The award is worth 30,000 [pounds sterling] (about $44,000) and, though less headline-grabbing than the Turner Prize, is England's largest art award.
Photojournalist James Nachtwey is the winner of the 2002 Lou Stoumen Prize for Photography, given biannually by the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. He receives $35,000. Ruth Bernhard and Joel Meyerowitz were each honored by the museum with its Century Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The Battery Park City Authority was recently given the Doris C. Freedman Award for its commitment to open spaces and the integration of public art works. It is the first time in 10 years that the award has been presented.
