Cleveland Museum overhaul - Art World - design by architect Rafael Vinoly - Brief Article

Art in America,  May, 2003  by Stephanie Cash,  David Ebony

Architect Rafael Vinoly recently unveiled his design for a $225-million expansion and renovation project for the Cleveland Museum of Art. The plan calls for a restoration of the original 1916 Beaux-Arts building as well as a 1971 Marcel Breuer annex, and the demolition of 1958 and 1983 additions.

Vinoly will link the two existing buildings by means of glass and steel structures, including a cantilevered glass canopy sheltering a 38,000 square-foot courtyard. Increasing the museum's size by 43 percent, the design provides 40,000 square feet of new exhibition space for temporary displays as well as selections from the museum holdings of over 40,000 objects. A new auditorium, an expanded library to accommodate the museum's 346,000 volumes, a restaurant and an underground parking lot are also part of the scheme. Groundbreaking is scheduled for late next year.
