Israeli-born video and installation artist Irit Batsry is the winner of the second Bucksbaum Award, given to an artist included in the Whitney Biennial exhibition. The prize includes $100,000 and an artist residency and exhibition at the museum.
Canadian photographer Jeff Wall is the recipient of the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for 2002. He will receive approximately $49,000 and a show at the Hasselblad Center in Goteborg, Sweden, in November.
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster has been awarded the second Marcel Duchamp Prize, given by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art. She receives approximately $30,700 and an exhibition at the Pompidou Center [Oct. 15-Dec. 15]. Other artists shortlisted for the prize were Bernard Frize, Valerie Jouve, Anri Sala and Wang Du.
Liz Larner is the winner of the second annual Lucelia Artist Award, given by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and funded by the New York-based Lucelia Foundation. The $25,000 award is given to an artist under the age of 50.
Susanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society, at the University of Chicago and a co-curator of this year's Documenta, recently received the Bard College Award for Curatorial Excellence.
The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is honoring Robert Rauschenberg with its Medal Award for his efforts in advancing the development and understanding of contemporary art.
The 2002 Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, given by the International Sculpture Center in Hamilton, N.J., has been presented to Italian artist Gio' Pomodoro.
The Judith Rothschild Foundation has announced the recipients of 19 grants benefiting 18 artists. The grants, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, and totaling over $250,000, are given to support the work of deceased under-appreciated artists through museum acquisitions, exhibitions and publications, and through archiving and conservation. The selected projects support artists Herman Cherry, Beauford Delaney, Douglas Huebler, Ana Mendieta, Art Sinsabaugh, Edward Biberman, Norman Bluhm, Clyde Connell, Henry Koerner, Leon Polk Smith, Al Taylor, Alma Woodsey Thomas, Francesca Woodman, Ester Bubley, Rudy Burckhardt, lone Robinson, George Sugarman and H.C. Westermann.
