More art for Beacon, N.Y - Front Page - Beacon Sculpture Garden by Max Protetch - Brief Article
Art in America, March, 2003
On May 17 and 18, coinciding with the opening of the new Dia: Beacon facility [see "Front Page," May '99], New York art dealer Max Protetch will premiere his Beacon Sculpture Garden as a "work in progress"; it will officially open in September. The park is located at the other end of Main Street from Dia, on a five-acre site purchased from the adjacent Tallix sculpture foundry. A 5,000-square-foot refurbished industrial building will be used for storage and exhibitions, and an old mansion on the site is being renovated and converted into apartments, one of which will be reserved for artists commissioned by Protetch to create work at Tallix. He hopes to receive a state grant to assist with the rehabilitation work.
In keeping with his gallery's programming and his interest in fostering collaborations between artists and architects, Protetch will present works by artists such as Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Scott Burton, Mel Chin, Sol LeWitt and Marjetica Potrc, along with architects Zaha Hadid, Greg Lynn and others. Plans call for two exhibitions per year, which will be linked to shows at Protetch's Chelsea gallery. All works at the Beacon site will be for sale.
