New NEA head dies unexpectedly - Art World - Michael P. Hammond, National Endowment for the Arts - Brief Article
Art in America, March, 2002 by Stephanie Cash, David Ebony
Michael P. Hammond, the newly appointed head of the National Endowment for the Arts [see "Artworld," Feb. '02], was found dead in his temporary residence in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 29, apparently of natural causes. He was 69. Hammond had just assumed his duties a week earlier. A composer and music scholar, he had served for 15 years as dean of the music school at Rice University in Houston, where he also taught in the music and neuroscience departments.
Eileen Mason, senior deputy chairwoman, will serve as acting chairwoman until a new appointment is made.
