Dia:Chelsea closes for renovations - Art World - Brief Article

Art in America,  Feb, 2004

Squelching rumors that it might permanently shut down its Chelsea quarters--a pioneering presence in the area now crowded with galleries--the Die Art Foundation recently announced the temporary closing of the 22nd Street location while the building undergoes upgrades and renovations. The space closed last month and is scheduled to reopen in 2006. Plans call for the construction of additional bathrooms, the installation of a climate-control system that will allow Dia:Chelsea to remain open in the summer, improved elevator and staircase access, and repairs to the leaky roof, which involves temporarily hoisting up Dan Graham's large-scale pavilion that has dominated the rooftop garden since 1991. Dia's lecture program will resume this spring at various Chelsea galleries.

The Dia foundation is in the midst of a $50-million capital campaign, with $30 million earmarked for the Chelsea upgrades and the rest for the Dia:Beacon endowment and support of the foundation's long-term projects. So far, it has raised $10 million.
