Aga Khan Awards for Architecture

Art in America,  Jan, 1999

The 1998 Aga Khan Awards for Architecture were recently bestowed on seven buildings and urban projects. The awards, given every three years, were founded in 1977 by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims. The awards honor projects, not architects, that, in addition to having artistic merit, focus on the social and spiritual needs of Muslim societies.

Winners this year are the rehabilitation of Hebron Old Town on the West Bank; a comprehensive sanitation program for the slums of Indore City, India; a leper hospital in Chopda Taluka, India; the Alhamra Arts Council, a private arts organization in Lahore, Pakistan; Tuwaiq Palace, a recreation center for the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Vidhan Bhavan, the new state assembly building in Bhopal, India.
