> The Japan Art Association has presented its Praemium Imperiale awards, worth approximately $125,000 each, to five individuals. The prize is given for lifetime achievement in the arts in areas not covered by the Nobel Prizes. The winners are Bridget Riley for painting, Marie Merz for sculpture, Rem Koolhaas for architecture, Claudio Abbado for music and Ken Loach for theater/film direction.
