The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced the 23 recipients of its 2001 fellowships. Each winner receives $500,000 over five years. The visual-arts field garnered three awards, to critic and curator Dave Hickey, mixed-media artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle and David Wilson, designer and curator of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles.
Filmmaker and installation artist Isaac Julien has received the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts, given by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The inaugural Bucksbaum Family Award for Emerging American Photographers has been given to Deborah Luster for her series on prisoners in Louisiana. She receives $10,000.
Winners of the Beck's Futures 2 art prize, sponsored by Beck's Beer and given by the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, were recently named. Tim Stoner is the first place winner and receives 10,000 [pounds sterling] (about $14,500). Artists receiving 3,000 [pounds sterling]-4,000 [pounds sterling] ($4,300-$5,800) each are Shahin Afrassiabi, Simon Bill, David Burrows, Brian Griffiths, Dan Holdsworth, Gemma Iles, DJ Simpson, Clare Woods and the team of Fabienne Audeoud and John Russell.
