Art in America, Nov, 2002 by Stephanie Cash, David Ebony
As part of its Projects series, the Museum of Modern Art has commissioned three artists to create images for billboards in Queens and Manhattan. Sarah Morris, Julian Opie and Lisa Ruyter each designed five images that represent their take on the urban experience, from Ruyter's colorful scenes of sporting and cultural events in New York to stills from Morris's films shot in various cities.
Opie has contributed wistful images of billboardless roads winding through the countryside, conveying the escapist desires of many city-dwellers. Twelve works are located in Long Island City, Queens, near MOMA's temporary outpost and its affiliate P.S. 1, and three are sited in the gallery-dense Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan. They will remain on view through Dec. 1.
