Japanese architect Toyo Ito was presented with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Photographer Robert Frank is the winner of the Edward MacDowell Medal, given annually by the MacDowell Colony, for his outstanding contribution to the arts.

The American Federation of Arts recently presented Philadelphia Museum director Anne d'Harnoncourt and artist Maya Lin with its Cultural Leadership Awards.

The International Sculpture Center, based in Hamilton, N.J;, has named Elizabeth Catlett as the recipient of its 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jimbo Blachly is the winner of the 2002 SculptureCenter Prize. The award is given to an under-recognized artist with a mature body of work. An exhibition of his work will be on view at the center's new Long Island City facility [Dec. 14, 2002-Feb. 3, 2003].

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art recently announced the winners of its SECA Art Awards for 2002. They are John Bankston, Andrea Higgins, Chris Johanson and Will Rogan. The biennial prize, which is administered by the auxiliary group In/Site, includes a shared exhibition at SFMOMA with an accompanying catalogue and a cash award.

The George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award, given for outstanding art-history publications, was recently announced by the Art Libraries Society of North America. Top honors went to Jacob van Ruisdael: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, Drawings and Etchings by Harvard professor Seymour Slive. Receiving honorable mentions were Ancient Sichuan: Treasures from a Lost Civilization, which accompanied a traveling exhibition organized by the Seattle Art Museum, and Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South, the catalogue for a show co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

Artist Helene Aylon was recently presented with a Jewish Cultural Achievement Award, given by the National Federation for Jewish Culture.

The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Mass., awarded its Rappaport Prize, worth $20,000, to Vermont-based sculptor Lars-Erik Fisk.

The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston has presented its fourth annual Artist Prize to sculptor Alice Swinden Carter. She receives $2,500 and an exhibition at the ICA.
