An artist's gift

Art in America,  Nov, 2004

It's a well-known fact that big-dollar art prizes are often given to artists who don't really need the extra cash. Earlier this year, Mexico City-based Belgian artist Francis Alys won the inaugural blueOrange Award, worth approximately $86,000. In a grand, altruistic gesture, he subsequently donated the prize money to a training center for street children in Mexico City.

The biennial prize honors innovative artists whose work addresses important themes in society. Christopher Pleister, president of the Federal Association of German Cooperative Banks, which bestows the award, said that "for an artist who has repeatedly focused on the difficult social conditions in Mexico, and whose modesty has remained completely intact for all his international fame, the fact that he is donating the prize money is logically consistent with his oeuvre and his personal attitude. We most certainly welcome the fact that our commitment to art is now also benefiting a social project." As part of the award, the winner is asked to select an up-and-coming artist to receive an additional prize of about $8,600. Alys selected the Mexican artist collective Tercerunquinto. Works by Alys and the collective team were on view in Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau in September-October.
