Tough times for high-profile museum projects

Art in America,  Nov, 2004

Two major international museum projects have recently run into trouble; one has been canceled, the other put on hold. In September, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London announced the cancellation of its long-planned addition, designed in 1996 by Daniel Libeskind. Dubbed the Spiral and frequently described as a jumbled stack of boxes, the $85.9-million addition was to have served as a contemporary design center. The museum said that, though it had already raised a substantial amount of money, applications for essential government funding from the Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund were recently rejected.

And the Guggenheim Museum has suspended plans for its Jean Nouvel-designed Rio de Janeiro branch, especially notable for its innovative underwater component at the projected bayside site. A spokesperson for the architect confirmed that the project is suspended, but not canceled. According to Guggenheim spokesman Anthony Calnek, the project is on hold "pending resolution of a court challenge in Brazil to the validity of the contract between the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation." it is expected to take "quite a long time before the matter is resolved in the Brazilian courts."
