Looking for a place to stay on a Tahoe ski trip? Besides the usual questions about rates and location, now you might ask, "What's for breakfast?' "Can we bring our kids?' "Is there a ski package?'

Nearly a dozen bed-and-breakfast inns have sprung up over the past few years in the Lake Tahoe area, offering a total of 49 rooms. None is more than 30 minutes --by car or public bus--from downhill or cross-country skiing, and some are no more than a 5-minute walk away.

Some of the inns are strictly bed and breakfast; others are more like small hotels. Two have restaurants. Unless noted, earliest breakfast is at 8, so you shouldn't plan to be first on the slopes. All but one offer indoor, locked ski storage.

Hurry if you want to make reservations for the holidays or a specific weekend; some inns may already be full. Most require a minimum stay of two nights on weekends during ski season, and a few require two nights during the week. Since most of these are private houses and owners are often away during the day, call during the evening.

Rates are for one night, double occupancy, with breakfast included. Few accept credit cards, but most accept personal checks. None allows pets. Some offer ski packages and lift discounts; call for details. Unless noted, area code is 916.

Nordon, Truckee

Norden House, Box 94, Norden 95724; 426-3326. One of old Highway 40's provision and rooming stops, this aging building has been recently restored with five bedrooms, three with private bath. Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge are only 1/2 mile away. Pickup is available from Truckee airport and Greyhound bus stop on I-80, Children discouraged; smoking in living room only. Rates: $36 to $52.

A-Room-at-the-Top, Box 305, Soda Springs 95728; 426-3211. Country-style furnishings and a woodstove contrast with this condominium's modern architecture. It's a 5-minute walk to Boreal Ridge; Royal Gorge is 3 miles away. There's cross-country skiing at Castle Peak, a 5-minute walk. Two rooms downstairs share a bath; upstairs living room for guest use. Children welcome. Rates: $35 to $50.

Bradley House, Box 2011, Truckee 95734; 587-5388. Large restored Victorian sits on a hill overlooking Truckee and mountains beyond. Innkeepers will pick up guests at Truckee airport, Amtrak station, and Greyhound stops. There's downhill and cross-country skiing at Northstar, 6 miles away. Upstairs, five rooms share a divided bath; one downstairs room has a woodstove, private bath, and separate entrance. Breakfast at 7:30; complimentary wine and cheese in late afternoon. Color TV and VCR in living room. No smoking; ask if you can bring children. Rates: $40 to $60; 20 percent midweek discount for two or more nights.

Tahoe City, Tahoma

Mayfield House, Box 5999, Tahoe City 95730; 583-1001. Built in 1932, this is the area's most traditional B&B. Take breakfast in bed or in the dining room; enjoy complimentary wine in the evening. It's a 1/2-block walk to downtown Tahoe City and free buses to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, 10 miles away. Six rooms share three baths. Breakfast at 8:30, can be served earlier. No children under 10. Rates: $55 to $75; Visa and Master Card accepted.

Cedar Tree, Box 7106, Tahoe City 95730; 583-5421. Contemporary wood-shingled house, comfortable but not lavish, sits in a quiet location. Continental breakfast. On weekends, owner will take guests cross-country skiing on nearby wilderness trails (no instruction). Alpine Meadows, Homewood, and Squaw Valley are within 15 minutes' drive. Three rooms, one with private bath. Children welcome. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Rates: $30. Lakeside House, Box 7108, Tahoe City 95730; 583-8769. Built in 1916 and recently restored with a B&B in mind, this gambrelroofed mountain hideaway opened last August. Home-cooked breakfast; games, playing cards, paperback library for evenings and snowbound days. Homewood, Squaw, and Alpine ski areas are within 15 minutes' drive; wilderness cross-country trails are three blocks away. Four rooms, one with private half-bath; all share a shower. No children. Rates: $55 to $65. Alpenhaus Country Inn, Box 262, Tahoma 95733; 525-5000. Enjoy a European mood--Basque night on Thursdays, Tyrolean night on Sundays, strolling accordionist, and a hearty breakfast in the inn's restaurant. Homewood is 2 miles away for downhill skiing; Sugar Pine Point State Park 1/4 mile away for cross-country. Seven rooms with private baths; those at the back are quieter. Children allowed; two rooms can be joined to make a suite. Rates: $49 to $61; major credit cards accepted.

South Shore, Carson City, North Shore

Christiana Inn, Box 6870, South Lake Tahoe 95729; 544-7337. Exterior is a combination of Swiss chalet and 1950s tract house. Furnishings are part import store, part antique shop; restaurant downstairs serves innovative continental dinners. Heavenly Valley is a convenient 5-minute walk; cross-country skiing at Telemark Country Sports is a 5-minute drive. Five rooms with private baths, including two suites. Children welcome. Rates: $75 to $150; major credit cards.
