Persimmons

Sunset,  Nov, 2005  by Kathleen N. Brenzel

In November, orange fruits dangle like ornaments among yellow or orange leaves of Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki) that glow in sunlight. The deciduous trees reach 30 feet tall and grow best in mild parts of Oregon and California (Sunset climate zones 6-9, 14-16, and 18-21). To save the crop from birds, harvest when fruits are golden orange but still hard, then ripen them indoors.
