College World Series
Sporting News, The, May 29, 2000
The countdown to the College World Series has just two weeks to go (June 9-17). The 64-team postseason lineup was announced this past Monday, and the battle for a trip to Omaha, Neb., begins with the regionals this weekend. By winning one of the 16 four-team brackets, teams advance to one of eight super regionals (June 2-4), which will determine the eight-team CWS lineup.
This year's top contenders entering the regionals are South Carolina, Florida
State, Arizona State and Stanford. All four teams will have homefield advantage as host to a regional.
The Gamecocks and Seminoles have been the top two teams for much of the season. South Carolina started the season 21-0 and has one of the nation's top pitching staffs. FSU has been led by a well-balanced offense, strong starting pitching and an excellent bullpen.
A look at some of the top players:
Kip Bouknight, Jr./RHP, South Carolina. As the top pitcher on the nation's top team, Bouknight has fulfilled the high expectations placed on him: 15-1 with a 2.87 ERA and four complete games.
Shane Komine, So./RHP, Nebraska. The Huskers' ace led the team to the Big 12 title. He was 10-3 with a 2.20 ERA in his first 15 starts, including 142 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings.
Casey Myers, Jr./C, Arizona State. In addition to leading ASU's offense, Myers has excelled behind the plate with his pitch calling. He was hitting .417 with 15 homers and 86 RBIs.
Mark Teixeira, So./3B, Georgia Tech. With a .420 average and 64 walks, he arguably is the most feared hitter in college baseball. He also is the early favorite as the No. 1 pick in next year's draft.
