This is a book meant to be read and used simultaneously by parents and their children. It covers basics such as bird anatomy, habits, and habitats, but the main part of the book is an identification guide containing color photographs taken mostly by wildlife photographer Tom Vezo. The guide describes, in lively, easy to understand language, 30 birds that novice bird-watchers are likely to see. This section also includes pointers on how to identify birds by sight and sound, how to keep a birding life list and journal, and what tools make birding easier. Other elaborately illustrated sections include instructions for creating a bird-friendly habitat, plans for a nesting platforms and a nesting box, and some kid-friendly details on several "incredible" birds. This book is an attractive tool for an adult teaching a child about nature in general and birding in particular. Storey Publishing, LLC, 2005, 128 p., color photos and illus., paperback, $14.95.
