THE CREATION: An Appeal to Save Life on Earth

EDWARD O. WILSON

The call to preserve Earth's biodiversity increasingly comes not only from environmentalists but also from religious leaders. Both groups realize that whether today's living things came about in a few days of creation or through millions of years of evolution, many of them are now imperiled. Biologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Wilson uses this common ground as a launching point for his treatise on the importance of conservation. Written as a letter to an imaginary Southern Baptist pastor, Wilson's book lays out the manifold reasons why he believes that science and religion must come together for the sake of the planet. He illustrates the increasing danger of wilderness destruction, extinctions of plant and animal species, global warming, and invasive species. He draws his experiences both as a Southerner and as a biologist in describing his quest to understand nature on spiritual and scientific levels. Norton, 2006, 175 p., hardcover, $21.95.
