Border truths
Christian Century, April 8, 2008 by Liane Sickels, Richard Dubiel
At last! A public statement about the wall being built along our border with Mexico ("Wall of shame," Feb. 12). Newspapers, commentators, politicians and theologians should have been flooding this country with articles against this "method" of dealing with the immigration problem, but hardly anyone else has taken a strong stance against this wall. Thank you for your courage.

The United States cannot dismiss the
reality of 12 million illegal aliens for fear of being thought xenophobic. There is nothing xenophobic in telling the truth about an invading population. We do need foreign people, as we had them for most of the mid-20th century, until President Clinton began a policy of allowing mass overimmigration. The figure 300,000 people per year--from all over the world--is about right. But that was too few for Big Business, the Wall Street Journal, Big Education--and Big Religion, which saw a real opportunity to replenish ever-dwindling church membership. Never mind about a sustainable environment, the economy or the middle class.
