PEACEMAKER HOSTAGES: James Loney, 41, shown here at an earlier protest in Baghdad calling attention to war detainees, was one of four activists with Christian Peacemaker Teams taken hostage in the Iraqi capital on November 26. Kidnappers threatened to kill the four, whom they have called spies, unless the U.S. and British governments release all Iraqi detainees and take their troops out of the country. Prayer vigils around the world have been held by Christian and Muslim groups for the four: Quaker Tom Fox of Clearbrook, Virginia; Norman Kember of London, England; and two Canadians--Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden. Captors extended their first deadline (December 8) at least once. Al-Jazeera television aired on December 7 a video sent by the kidnappers showing two hostages wearing robes and shackled with chains. Christian Peacemaker Teams, which has sent groups of peace activists to dangerous scenes worldwide as witnesses to nonviolence, denied charges that the four acted as spies. The Baghdad CPT issued a statement December 6 criticizing the U.S. and British governments for their actions in Iraq and urged kidnappers "to show mercy" and allow the four men to "come back safely to us to continue our work."
