Dethroning humans

Christian Century,  Dec 11, 2007

DETHRONING HUMANS: Darwinian evolution evokes two responses, according to the science adviser to Pope Benedict XVI: "One is the atheist view; ... the other is the theistic response, believing that God is the cause of this process." But Antje Jackelen, Swedish bishop and theologian, thinks that the issue for Christians troubled by the idea of evolution isn't God but human beings.

"'It is not so much the loss of the god-ness of God [as] the loss of the human-ness of humans that concerns many of those who feel an attraction toward creation science or Intelligent Design," she says. "It is the dethronement of humans rather than the God-question that shakes people up." The theological challenge, then, is not so much about whether God exists but about what it means to be human, what is unique about humanity (Theology and Science, July).
