Persecution in Syria …
Christian Century, Dec 11, 2007 by Christa von Zychlin
BARBARA LAW'S article ("Syrian sabbaths," Oct. 16) in which she shares her experience of a vibrant interfaith tolerance in Syria was thought-provoking and informative. I take issue, however, with her assertion that "in Syria Christians are not allowed to proselytize," but "these laws don't constitute persecution." Many Christians, myself included, consider sharing the Good News of Jesus in a persuasive manner with those who have not yet heard it in its fullness to be one of the defining characteristics of the open practice of Christianity. If that aspect of Christian discipleship is forbidden by law, than I would indeed consider that to be persecution of Christians.
