FRUITLESS ENCOUNTER: President Bush meets with Roman Catholic Cardinal Pio Laghi at the White House in March 2003. Laghi made a last-ditch and unsuccessful effort on behalf of the Vatican to try to persuade Bush not to go to war in Iraq, At least one Vatican observer says the disagreement has hurt the relationship between the Republican Party and the Vatican.
