PROTEST IN MYANMAR: Monks and bystanders watch a protest in Yangon September 26. According to Myanmar's main Buddhist organization, monks were among those killed in the country's main city when security forces moved in to disperse the biggest antijunta demonstrations in 20 years. For several days monks had led demonstrations that involved as many as 100,000 before the crackdown began. Hundreds of monks and activists were arrested on the 26th. President Bush announced new sanctions against Myanmar's military junta, and White House spokesperson Gordon Johndroe urged it to "show restraint and to move to a peaceful transition to democracy."
