Open borders? …
Christian Century, Oct 3, 2006 by Dean Lanning
THE PERSPECTIVE of the editorial on immigration titled "Sojourners" (July 11) is held by many who are compassionate, but it is also fostered by the greedy and cynical. Some seek votes. Many want a steady flow of cheap labor, which serves to exploit already-poor workers who live under the threat of being fired as the result of an influx of workers who will work for even less.
The editorial purports to be in support of the poor. In fact, it could be cheered on by wealthy employers who are eager to get laborers on the cheap--laborers who are in no position to clamor for decent wages or better conditions.
"Having open borders for immigration is a logical corollary to having open borders for trade"--the Bush administration could use that editorial line verbatim.
