Not bread alone

NOT BREAD ALONE: Famine in Niger is much in the news, but rarely mentioned is the issue of population growth, says John F. Rohe. Niger now has 12 million people, and its population is projected to grow to 53 million by 2050 despite widespread loss of life because of malnutrition, AIDS and other calamities.
Niger has the highest fertility rate in the world, at 8.0 children per woman, according to the Population Reference Bureau. While food aid is urgently needed there, Rohe argues that such aid must be accompanied by funding for family planning (www.caglecartoons.com).
