Caption: EDGAR ARRESTED: National Council of Churches executive Bob Edgar (r) was arrested, fined and released July 14 by the U.S. Secret Service outside the Sudan embassy in Washington, D.C., while protesting massive killings in the African nation. A United Methodist minister and a onetime congressman, Edgar told the crowd: "The solution rests at the door of the government of Sudan and also at the feet of the international community, [which] must act now." Churches and related agencies, including the NCC, have pressed for a U.S.-led intervention in Sudan where the genocide-like actions pit Arab militiamen against black Africans in the western part of the country.
