Christian Century,  July 11, 2006

American philanthropic giving increased by 6 percent in 2005 compared to the previous year. While some of this increase is attributed to responses to natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, only 3 percent of the total estimated giving of $260.3 billion was for disaster relief. Recipients of these contributions (in percentages) were:

35.8 Religion
14.8 Education
 9.7 Human services
 8.7 Health
 8.3 Foundations
 6.2 Other allocated giving
 5.4 Public society benefit
 5.2 Art, culture, humanities
 3.4 Environment and animals
 2.5 International affairs
