Patriarc Rebuffs Peers

PATRIARCH REBUFFS PEERS: Irineos I, the Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem, said May 24 that he will not resign despite a decision earlier that day by leaders of most major Orthodox churches to withdraw recognition of the beleaguered patriarch. The rare synod in Istanbul convened by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos I was attended by Irineos, who dismissed as "political" the accusations that he had sold church property illegally.
The synod did not have the authority to remove Irineos, but the decision allowed a committee to proceed with the election of a new patriarch, said the Athens News Agency.
