Booklets to help at-risk youth - William Gladden Foundation of New York

Children Today,  Sept-Oct, 1990

The William Gladden Foundation of New York has developed the "At Risk" series, a group of easy to understand, plain-language booklets that offer practical insights and guidance for professionals, families and communities coping with the difficult issues confronting today's youth. The materials are designed as reference tools that can be utilized by educators, guidance counselors, judges, psychologists, social workers, PTA and civic service groups, clergy, pediatricians, juvenile officers and probation personnel, in-service directors, and others who work with and for children. The Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping neglected, dependent and delinquent youth, and the parents and professionals concerned about the welfare of today's youth.

Titles in the series include: Cocaine, Crack and Kids; When Children Use Drugs; Under-Age Drinking; What Parents Should Know About Juvenile Delinquency and Juvenile Justice; Truancy, Chronic Absenteeism and Dropping Out, Missing and Runaway Children; Aggression and Violence in Youth; About Child Sexual Abuse; Teenage Pregnancy,- and AIDS and Children.

Other booklets explore such subjects as the effects of divorce on children, behavioral and emotional problems common to alcoholic families, identifying and reducing childhood depression and suicide risk, the detection and treatment of learning disabilities, juvenile fire-setting syndrome, hyperactivity, and latchkey children. Also included are booklets focusing on childhood eating disorders, developmentally delayed children, and helping students improve study habits and learning potential.

Among the Foundation's other resources are a variety of audiovisual programs, including slide presentations child and drug abuse for parents, medical and legal professionals and human resources personnel; videos on social interaction and decision making for teachers and guidance counselors of pre-adolescents; and computer software programs and self-esteem workbooks for children.

Information on ordering the 30 "At Risk" booklets and other materials may be obtained from the William Gladden Foundation, 79 Carley Ave., Huntington, N.Y. 11743.
