Charles V celebrations - festivities in Ghent, Belgium, will mark the 500 anniversary of the birth of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V - Brief Article
Magazine Antiques, Nov, 1999 by Miriam Kramer
The future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) was born in Ghent. At the age of six he inherited the Netherlands, and ten years later he also became ruler of Spain, Naples, Sardinia, and Spanish territories in Africa and North America. By the age of nineteen he had added the Hapsburg lands to his domain, and in 1520 he was crowned emperor in Aachen. His thirty-five-year reign coincided with the transition of the lands under his control from the late Middle Ages to the modern age. Among those active during this time were Nicolaus Copernicus, Martin Luther, Gerardus Mercator, Desiderius Erasmus, and Albrecht Durer. Charles's reign was marked by many attempts to contain the Reformation in Europe and to keep the Turks at bay. After a string of political failures, he abdicated in 1556 and retired to a Spanish monastery, where he was still active in affairs of state at his death in 1558.
A variety of events have been organized in Ghent to mark the five-hundredth anniversary of Charles's birth. An exhibition entitled Carolus V is on view at the Sint-Pietersabdij until January. 30, 2000. Mounted with the cooperation of museums in Bonn, Vienna, and Madrid, it includes maps, historical documents, illuminated manuscripts, and prints that examine the pan-European aspect of Charles V's life and reign. The catalogue is available in Dutch, French, or English. At the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Mise-en-Scene: Staging the Past looks at Charles V as an influence in the nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on the parallels between colonization in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as at Charles as a subject for history. painters. That exhibition is on view from December 1 to March 19, 2000.
Other aspects of Charles V will be explored in exhibitions in Brussels, Antwerp, and other cities, as well as in Ghent. Details on all events, and their accompanying publications, may be obtained by telephoning 32-70-23-38-88.
