SAP will tailor to fit in vertical markets - SAP America Inc's strategy to provide customized technology solutions for vertical industries - Brief Article

Software Magazine,  Jan, 1995

Klaus Besier, president and CEO of SAP America Inc., Philadelplhia, is clearly ready to bring customized technology solutions to companies within specialized vertical industries. The company is finding increasing success as a provider of integrated client/server and mainframe-based business applications.

"We will be more proactively preconfiguring systems for industry-specific requirements," said Besier. "There are a lot of things we can do up-front in preconfiguring systems for a certain industry. One of the issues for the ICOE [Industry Centers of Expertise, the company program to help specific industries! organization is to identify potential partners." SAP's ICOE initiative will also provide industry-specific training and consulting services.

Success can be a tiger. Some question whether demand for SAP expertise might be too great. Specifically, the Gartner Group, a Stamford, Conn., market research firm, has estimated that the U.S. market could absorb 3,000 to 4,000 SAP consultants. At present, there are only about 2,000 consultants with relevant SAP experience available, said Gartner
