Ask Computer tastes success - the Ask Group's Ask Computer Systems benefits from innovations in manufacturing processes through its Manman/X product - Monitor - Brief Article

Software Magazine,  Sept 15, 1993

The Ask Group's Ask Computer Systems, Mountain View, Calif., has been riding a wave of innovation in manufacturing processes. As manufacturers try to reduce cycle times, they are also trying to build customized products. "The combination of the two presents something of a challenge," said Peter West, vice president of marketing.

Ask's Manman/X product seems to be up to the task. According to West, by the end of the firm's fiscal year on June 30, shipments of the product totaled 112 licenses. West estimated that the Unix- product will bring in $60 million in revenues in the coming fiscal year.

West acknowledged that it takes more than technology for a product to be successful. Commitment to the customer is also important, even when that commitment requires special effort. For example, during a tour of a plant that Manman/X helped automate, West recalled that his client, a pet food manufacturer, insisted that he sample the firm's products.
