Section II: jurisdictional hate crime statistics, 1999

Uniform Crime Reports: Hate Crime Statistics,  Annual, 1999

Fifteen percent of the 12,122 law enforcement agencies that provided 1 to 12 months of data to the FBI's Hate Crime Program reported that at least one hate crime occurred in their jurisdiction during 1999. The remaining 85 percent of participating agencies reported that no instances of hate crime occurred.

Table 12 supplies individual state totals for the number of participating agencies, the populations represented, the number of agencies submitting incident reports, and the number of incidents reported.

Unlike previous years' publications, in this year's edition Table 13 includes those agencies that submitted one or more hate crime incidents and Table 14, those that submitted reports indicating no instances of hate crime occurred. Both tabular presentations are by state with each state subdivided by agencies within cities, universities and colleges, suburban counties, rural counties, state police agencies, and other agencies when applicable.

As stated previously, many variables not considered in this publication can affect the volume and type of crime from place to place. For this reason and because these figures do not represent 12-month totals for every agency listed, data users are cautioned against making direct comparisons among agencies.
