Kansas utility to acquire more renewable energy

Renewable Energy Today,  March 5, 2007

Kansas utility Westar Energy has announced it will acquire up to 500 megawatts of renewable energy by 2010 with the most likely source being wind power.

The company said that this would more than double the amount of the state's energy that comes from windmills and be a significant step towards Gov. Kathleen Sebelius's goal of 10% of the state's electricity coming from wind power.

Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson said the Westar announcement is validation of the state's collaborative approach to encouraging wind power, which focuses on working with utilities rather than mandating they build wind farms.
