Renewable Energy Today, Jan 13, 2006
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Small Business Development Center recently recognized Green Mountain Power Corporation as an "environmental partner" in the Vermont Business Environmental Partnership.
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation noted that Green Mountain Power, which serves 90,000 customers within the state, generates electricity without the use of coal and utilizes fossil fuel for only four percent of its power needs. More than 40 percent of the company's energy is derived from such renewable sources as hydropower, wood and wind.
The department also commended Green Mountain Power for the purchase and use of hybrid and low-emission vehicles in its fleet, as well as subscribing to vehicle idling guidelines to minimize emissions. Additionally, Green Mountain Power has started to utilize a 20-percent biodiesel mixture in its larger vehicles.
