Potlach to Study Feasibility of Biorefinery at AR Facility

Renewable Energy Today,  Jan 13, 2006

Potlach Corporation recently announced it is working with partners to study the feasibility of building a pilot biorefinery to convert forest and agricultural waste into biofuels and other chemicals at the company's pulp and paperboard mill in Cypress Bend, AR.

According to Potlach, the biorefinery could potentially help the company cut energy costs and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

"Our Cypress Bend mill could potentially reduce natural gas usage by 1.6 million BTUs per year and purchased electricity by 80,000 megawatt-hours per year," said Potlatch pulp and paperboard division vice president Harry Seamans.

Potlach noted that it is working on the project with Winrock International, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and the Arkansas Department of Economic Development's Division of Energy. The partners hope to obtain funding from the Department of Energy.
